There are two different techniques which can be used to produce beautiful stained glass objects - traditional leaded
stained glass and Tiffany-style copper-foil work. We offer courses in both techniques.
A Leaded Glass panel made by a Student
Everyone will be familiar with traditional leaded stained glass which has been used for centuries to make beautiful
windows in homes, commercial and civic buildings and, of course, churches and cathedrals. Leaded windows are created
now in ways which are very similar to those in use 500 years ago, although our tools today are a lot better and
easier to use than those available to the old-time craftsmen!
Copper foil work was developed by Louis Comfort Tiffany towards the end of the 19th
Century. He used it to create stained glass designs which were more delicate and intricate, and more 3-dimensional,
than traditional leaded work. It is a very versatile technique which can be used to make
lampshades (for which Tiffany is famous) and also terrariums, light-catchers, mirror-surrounds, boxes, clocks - in fact
the list of beautiful stained glass projects you can create with copper foil is practically endless.
A simple Terrarium
1-Day Taster Courses
We run 'Taster' days in both techniques, where, as a complete beginner, you can learn the basics, from selecting glass and
patterns, through glass-cutting to assembling and soldering your own project. You will be able to take home a simple
leaded panel, or a light-catcher or terrarium made using the copper-foil method, depending on which technique you choose.
Many students choose to come for two days and learn both techniques, which not only gives them a good basis to develop
their own stained glass skills at home, is also double the fun!
Longer Stained Glass Courses
A "Tiffany" Lampshade
If you would prefer to spend more than a day on either of the Stained Glass skills you can do two or even three days
on either Lead work or Copper Foil work. This would allow you to complete a more complicated piece than in a single day
(such as a large terrarium or box in Foil work, or a larger panel/window in lead work). Please
contact us with your requirements and
we will be happy to help you.
We run our Stained Glass courses on Saturdays, Sundays, Thursdays and Fridays and you can do either technique on any
of those days. Please see below for the specific dates.
We run our Glass Jewellery courses on the Monday and Tuesday between the
Stained Glass weekend and weekday courses, and also on the Saturday and Sunday following, so that if you wish to do all
four courses, it is possible to take them over a single 4-day period (or 5 days during the week, with a day off on
Wednesday).
